What Are You Reading Wednesday

Hey guys!

It’s the middle of the week, and I’m in Copenhagen, exploring the wonderful lands of Denmark! Since I’m obviously very preoccupied with eating smorgasbords and Danish pastries, I am handing the reins over to my boyfriend to share his current read with us all!

We’ve been doing this a few weeks now so I won’t explain how it all works here, but if you’re new and want to find out how and get involved, check out my first What Are You Reading Wednesday post for a full rundown of what it’s all about! 🙂

Anyway, over to Sean!

His current read

Sean: I haven’t been reading a lot recently, but Brandon Sanderson is my favourite author and I’ve been waiting for Oathbringer since I finished Words of Radiance (the second book in the Stormlight Archive series).

BS MPR

I preordered the book and started reading it the second it arrived, but I’ve been too busy to finish it in 48 hours like the two previous books! Since this is the third book, I won’t go into details about the plot, but in a nutshell, I’d say the series is epic fantasy unlike Sanderson’s usual books, which are shorter and much less in-depth in comparison. The Stormlight Archive feels like it’s on a much grander scale – the world feels bigger, and we get to know the character and their story in a lot more detail than we’ve seen in his previous works.

The chapters are split between three very different main characters, spanning multiple different places. One is a prince leading an army, one is a slave belonging to another prince’s army, and the other is a scholar. Their paths end up intertwined due to a shared mission, which makes their previous problems/fights seem insignificant.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO PICK UP THE BOOK – COVER OR CONTENT?

Although the UK cover looks great (I really dislike the US covers in comparison), I would have picked it up no matter what was on the cover. After starting with the Mistborn trilogy, I learned that Sanderson had created the Cosmere, a universe linking many of his different books. Some characters appear across multiple different books, such as Hoid, who we know very little about, appearing in multiple books set on different planets. I’m going through every book in the Cosmere to put together all the pieces of the puzzle, plus the first two books in the Stormlight Archive are my all time favourite books.

WHO’S YOUR FAVOURITE CHARACTER SO FAR, AND WHY?

BS MPR 2The book switches between characters often, and every time I see the next chapter switch to another character, I think: “damnit, I don’t want to know about this character, I want to know what happens next with the current one!”

This happens every character swap!

If I was forced, I’d say Kaladin, due to his fight from son of a doctor to slave to something more.

WILL YOU FINISH THIS ONE?

Undoubtedly! And then I’ll catch up on the rest of the Cosmere!

THIS BOOK REMINDS ME OF…

In terms of scale and scope, it reminds me of epic fantasies such as The Name of the Wind and Lord of the Rings, with each book in the Stormlight Archive being over a thousand pages. However, in terms of ease of reading and great character development, it’s closer to the Mistborn trilogy.

WHAT KIND OF READ IS THIS? (SLOW BUT INTERESTING, CAN’T PUT IT DOWN…)

It sounds strange to say it, but it feels like I’m still at the beginning of the book 350 pages in, so I don’t know how the pacing will be throughout the rest of the book. However, if it’s anything like the last two books and continues how it currently reads, each chapter leaves you wanting to know what happens next – but sometimes you may be waiting a few chapters to get back to a particular character! Luckily, all three main characters are interesting and it never feels like I want to skip ahead to quell the curiosity the previous chapters left me with.

Copenhagen sounds awesome. I’m so glad your boyfriend shared this because I’m now reminded I need to get this book for my husband’s birthday this weekend!

I love the UK covers for the rest of Cosmere’s books but I don’t like The Stormlight Archive ones. I prefer the US covers.
I’m reading this book now, I have about 400 pages left and I’m loving it so much. Although I liked more the previous two books. I love how Sanderson’s manages to write from the point of view of so many characters and I never get bored of them, with others books, sometimes when I have to read another character’s point of view I don’t like it and I want to continue reading about the previous character but with this series I’m always eager to know about whatever character the chapter is about 😊.

We love the UK covers! For me (Rhianna), I normally always prefer the US covers on books, so it makes a nice change 😂
Ooh, nearly done then! Good to know you still prefer the other two – I think Sean’s all time favourite book is one of those (can’t remember which one exactly though!)
Yes, that’s for Sean feels! He gets so into each character chapter that he doesn’t want it to end, but then the same thing happens with the next character, and over and over until the end of the book 😂

    What a pretty book!
I still don’t know if I should reread the first two before starting that one so in the meantime I’m waiting haha! I’m waiting for the mmp to be out to buy a copy anyway; but haaaa this is so exciting!

It’s gorgeous, isn’t it?! Haha, I haven’t read them but I can imagine there’s a LOT of information you’d forget in two 1000 page plus books over the years! Sean didnt reread but I think he did have to remind himself of a few things! 🙈

Sorry I didn’t have time to comment earlier!

I definitely agree. The UK covers are WAY better for all of Sanderson’s books.

I know people really love this series, but I just can’t get myself to start a 10-book series that isn’t even finished yet. 😂

No worries! Yes, I for once prefer the UK covers of a series! 😂 Yes, I’m starting with Mistborn as it’s only a trilogy, so maybe you could do the same! Sean read them and then devoured any other Sanderson he could get 😂

What are his politics?! He’s a Mormon though, right? Eh, religion’s not for me, but I don’t care about an author’s religion unless it’s a huge part of the story (well, I’d care about their religion even if it wasn’t if it was centred around murdering dogs or something bizarre in which case I don’t want my money going near it 😂)

He’s Mormon and conservative. He’s anti-LGBT (although I’ve heard he’s trying to change that). When I read the Mistborn trilogy, I didn’t really pick up on anything, but my dad read them at the same time. He told me all the ways the series was pushing his Mormon message, and that’s not okay with me.

Oh, yeah, the US covers are nowhere in the same league as the UK covers. 😃 I’m thinking of giving this series another try. I picked up the first book several months ago, but I couldn’t get into it. I thought the world-building was well-done though.
