What Are You Reading Wednesday

Hello! Somehow we’ve gotten to Wednesday yet again, so it’s time to check in with each other about our current reads!

We’ve been doing this a few weeks now so I won’t explain how it all works here, but if you’re new and want to find out how and get involved, check out my first What Are You Reading Wednesday post for a full rundown of what it’s all about! πŸ™‚

My current read

28962906So, for some reason, I’ve been having a bit of a reading slump – it literally took me 3 weeks to finishΒ The Scorpio Races,Β which is only 404 pages long! I have no idea why – I just wasn’t finding time to read half the time, and then the other half, I just couldn’t be bothered!

Anyway, I’ve heard a lot of good stuff aboutΒ Stalking Jack the RipperΒ by Kerri Maniscalco, so I’m hoping this is the one to snap me out of this slump!

From what I can gather having read a grand total of the blurb and two whole pages of the book, the story follows Audrey Rose Wadsworth, who is the daughter of a lord and expected to wear pretty dresses and attend tea parties, but secretly has a fascination with forensic medicine.

Audrey sneaks away to her uncle’s lab to study the subject, until a string of gruesomely murdered corpses leads her into the investigation of a serial killer. This is said to be a “deliciously creepy horror novel” with “a storyline inspired by the Ripper murders and an unexpected, blood-chilling conclusion”, plus real, sinister period photos. (There was a lovely shot of how to slice a cadaver open on the first page).

So, let’s see how creepy it is, eh?

Why did you decide to pick up this book – cover or content?

Content! It was kind of an unusual way to hear about this book actually – I was browsing the Behind the Pages website and I noticed a scent for Audrey which I thought sounded amazing, but I have a rule – I can’t buy products for characters I haven’t read the books about! But it got me thinking, so I looked the book up on Goodreads and thought it sounded intriguing, then suddenly I noticed it everywhere on Instagram, so I had to pick it up!

Who’s your favourite character so far, and why?

Well, having read a grand total of 2 pages, I’ve pretty much only met Audrey and sort of her uncle! I think I’m going to like Audrey though – anyone who can easily live a life of luxury and attend tea parties for a living but chooses to pursue what’s undoubtedly a very difficult path in forensic medicine is a cool person in my eyes!

Will you finish this one?

I think will I start this one is closer! But I aim to properly start it, and finish it too!

This book reminds me of…

You know, it definitely already reminds me of something, and I can’t place my finger on what exactly. I think because of the Victorian murder vibes I’m thinking of Sweeney Todd, but I doubt there’s going to be any killer barbers in these pages! It also just reminded me of Clockwork Angel, purely because of the Victorian era setting.

What kind of read is this one? (Slow but interesting, can’t put it down…)

I’m sensing it’ll be more the latter, but I can’t say for sure just yet!

I literally just finished the book late Monday night and it’s so good! It gave me some Sweeney Todd vibes and The Infernal Devices as well, but I think it’s because of the setting (there are definitely no daemon barbers of Fleet Street in this book, although, there is a character obsessed with his hair). This book definitely has its gruesome moments and is quite an exciting, it’s very light on the romance too which will make you happy. Oh, and I’m sure you will love Audrey Rose, she’s great! I can’t wait to hear what you think!

Oh, spooky!! Yeah, I think it must just be the time period it’s set in that’s reminding me of that! Haha, yes, is that Nathaniel by any chance?! Yeah, it’s more graphic than I envisioned – not grossly though so far! Lol, yes, only hints at romance, which is plenty of romance πŸ˜‚
